Despite the virtual setting, Dr. Elleman's passion for empowering struggling readers was palpable. She skillfully navigated the complexities of vocabulary acquisition and comprehension, offering practical strategies firmly rooted in research and best practices.
One aspect that particularly resonated with me was Dr. Elleman's emphasis on the critical role of vocabulary in comprehension. She underscored the importance of selecting texts at appropriate lexile levels and provided insightful guidance on leveraging quantitative measures like Lexile and ATOS for informed text selection. Understanding the intricate relationship between text complexity and student comprehension is paramount for educators striving to enhance literacy skills.
Dr. Elleman also introduced innovative tools such as Coh-Metrix, which offers valuable insights into text cohesion and readability. By harnessing tools like Coh-Metrix, educators can gain deeper insights into text features that bolster comprehension and tailor their instructional approaches accordingly.
