Literacy Systems
Systems that turn the science of reading into consistent, schoolwide instruction.
I lead the development and implementation of evidence-based literacy systems grounded in the science of reading. My work focuses on building schoolwide structures for explicit instruction, early identification, intervention, progress monitoring, and staff support so that more students receive the teaching they need to become successful readers.

Structured Literacy Instruction
Schoolwide Foundational Reading Systems
🔹 System Overview
Problem: Many students struggle with reading because instruction is not consistently aligned with how the brain processes language, leading to gaps in foundational skills and long-term academic challenges.
System: A schoolwide foundational reading system grounded in the science of reading and aligned to MTSS. It includes explicit, systematic instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and language comprehension, supported through Tier 1 core instruction, targeted intervention, and ongoing progress monitoring.
Implementation:
This system is implemented through:
-
Delivering daily explicit, systematic literacy instruction (phonological awareness, phonics, and language)
-
Using consistent instructional routines across classrooms
-
Implementing aligned core materials grounded in the science of reading
-
Providing targeted small-group instruction based on student data
-
Monitoring student progress regularly to guide instruction and intervention
-
Maintaining a clear scope and sequence to ensure cumulative skill development
-
Coaching staff in structured literacy practices aligned to the science of reading
Impact: Improved early literacy outcomes, increased reading proficiency, reduced special education referrals, and stronger foundational reading skills across diverse student populations.

Dyslexia & Reading Difficulties
🔹 System Overview
Problem: Students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties are often identified late or misunderstood, leading to gaps in foundational reading skills and access to grade-level content. Despite strong intelligence, these students may struggle with decoding, fluency, and spelling due to differences in how their brains process language.
System: A comprehensive dyslexia support system focused on early identification, evidence-based screening, and structured literacy intervention grounded in the science of reading. This system emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction, ongoing progress monitoring, and professional learning for educators to ensure instruction is aligned to student needs.
Implementation:
This system is implemented through:
-
Conducting universal screening using evidence-based literacy assessments
-
Establishing early identification protocols for students at risk for dyslexia
-
Delivering structured literacy intervention (explicit, systematic phonics and language instruction)
-
Providing small-group and individualized instruction aligned to student data
-
Monitoring progress regularly to adjust instruction in real time
-
Facilitating collaboration across general education, special education, and intervention teams
-
Building staff capacity through professional learning in structured literacy and dyslexia support
Impact: Earlier identification of reading difficulties, more targeted and effective intervention, and improved reading outcomes for students with dyslexia. Increased student confidence, stronger access to grade-level instruction, and reduced long-term academic gaps.
